Hey Friends!
This week I will be writing about one of my favorite films, Pride and Prejudice. I first watched this film maybe eight years ago and it quickly became one of my favorites. I will also note that Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book of all time, not just my favorite classic novel.
This is a film where you kind of know what’s going to happen before it happens. Yet, that doesn’t make the story less enjoyable. It’s a story that can never get old no matter if it’s the film or the book. This was a film that I thought had a good film adaptation. What I will say is the famous line “You have bewitched me body and soul,” is not in my edition of the book. I can’t find it. I’ve Googled the page number, the chapter and the part of the book it’s in but I can’t find it. Help and advice would be greatly appreciated. That is the only really disappointing thing about the film. I also found the book to be more detailed, per usual, but it didn’t seem to bother me as much as other book to film adaptation.
I love Matthew Macfayden as Darcy. I think he had the most perfect, time period correct look. That is exactly how I pictured him. On the contrary, I can’t say I am a big fan of Rupert Friend as George Wickham. I can’t put my finger on why I don’t like him, but something about it isn’t right. Obviously Keira Knightly is an amazing actress and played the one and only Elizabeth Bennet well. I would be curious to see what other actresses tried out for the role. Knightly was good but I wonder if she was the perfect match (like Macfayden to Darcy). Speaking of talented women, I just have to mention Rosamund Pike. In this film she played Miss Jane Bennet, the eldest daughter. She, of course, was great.
One character that I can never not talk about is Mr. Collin; who is played by Tom Hollander. He is a distant cousin of Mr. Bennet (Elizabeth’s father) and stays in the Bennet’s home for a period of time. I truly think his character is so funny. I would hate to say it’s funny because he’s awkward, but that wouldn’t be accurate. Truthfully, I couldn’t tell you why I love his character so much but I do.
I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again, I am a big fan of non-modern day settings. In this film, it shows how people lived in the, if i’m not mistaken, early 1800s. It refreshing because I live in modern times so a film set in the same time period that I live in isn’t as interesting to me.
I love the story line, the characters (all of them not just the characters I mentioned), the setting; everything about this film I love. I don’t have many derogatory thoughts, just the one that was previously mentioned.
Overall, I give the film a 10/10. I will definitely continue to watch this on a regular basis.
